LOCAL CREDIT UNION PARTNERED WITH NORMANDALE HILLS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TO CELEBRATE YOUTH AND SAVING
Eden Prairie, Minn. – United Educators Credit Union connected with Normandale Hills Elementary School to educate children on the importance of the save, share, spend principles and financial literacy during National Credit Union's Youth Week. The 2013 theme was Savings Sleuth: Solve the Mystery at the Credit Union. Mustaches were incorporated in the theme to express the idea of "'Stache your Cash at the Credit Union."
With the assisted effort of Normandale Hills principal Andy Vollmuth, UECU started a Penny Wars for a Cause challenge. Students designated VEAP (Volunteers Enlisted to Assist People) to share their pennies with. The Penny Wars raised $211 dollars during youth week. Students received a new penny when they completed a financial literacy worksheet. They could choose to save it, spend it or share it in the Penny Wars container. The class that raised the most money won a mustache party put on by UECU in May.
"United Educators Credit Union is committed to preparing youth to be financially responsible," said Carolyn Melugin, Eden Prairie Branch Supervisor. "The credit union's efforts would not be possible without the commitment of the Normandale Hills principal Andy Vollmuth, and the teachers that go above and beyond."
UECU and Normandale Hills Elementary School have been business/school partners since 2002, through the Prepare Bloomington program.
