Foundation Announces Scholarship Recipients

LOCAL CREDIT UNION FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

Woodbury, Minn. - United Educators Foundation is proud to announce the recipients of the annual academic scholarship awards for 2011. Each year, a total of $4,000 is awarded to educators for the purpose of professional development in the education field and to high school seniors for use at a post-secondary institutions. This year, an additional $1,500 scholarship was awarded to a student in their Junior or Senior year of college who is majoring in Education.

The 2011 scholarships winners are:

Christi Schmitt, of Marine on St. Croix, has been awarded a $2,000 Educator Scholarship. Schmitt is currently an English Language Learner Specialist at L'Etoile du Nord French Immersion School in St. Paul. She holds a Bachelors Degree in English from Augsburg College, received her ESL teaching licensure from Hamline, holds a Masters in Education from the University of Minnesota, and is a National Board of Professional Teaching Standards Certified Teacher. She plans to use the award to join a new cohort for a Doctorate of Education in Global Indigenous Education, Culture and Language at the University of Minnesota- Duluth. Schmitt is a very accomplished educator – she has published several national and local articles; she has given presentations for both state and national education conferences; and has received many grants and teaching awards, including being one of the 10 finalists for Education Minnesota's 2011 Teacher of the Year.

Catherine Miller, of Reiles Acres, North Dakota, received the first ever $1,500 Education Major Scholarship. Miller is majoring in Art Education at Minnesota State University Moorhead. She is currently the president of the MDUM National Art Education Association Student Chapter, and has received many academic and community awards. She will begin student teaching in the fall, and plans to pursue a career in teaching art education to at-risk students.

Jonathan Copa, of Ham Lake, has won a $1,000 Student Scholarship Award. Copa will graduate from Blaine High School this spring, and plans to attend the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities College of Science and Engineering. He has an excellent academic record, participates in the National Honor Society and the Center for Engineering, Math and Science Program, and is a currently ranked number two in the Senior Class at Blaine High School.

Eric Zishka, of Owatonna, received the second $1,000 Student Scholarship Award. Zishka graduates from Owatonna High School this spring, and plans to study Bio-Medical Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis. He also has an excellent academic record and is a member of the National Honor Society.

The United Educators Foundation Scholarship Awards is held annually and are open to United Educators Credit Union members and their families. The 2011 Selection Committee members include: Al Grandt – United Educators Credit Union and Foundation Board member, Dolly Buettner – Credit Union Supervisory Committee Chair, Paul Mueller – Education Minnesota Vice President, Robin Gunning, Credit union Ambassador and Media Specialist at Prior Lake High School, and Marilyn Raplinger – credit union member and retired teacher and principal from Burnsville schools.

The United Educators Foundation was established in 2008 to generate and provide contributive funding and resources that advance educational initiatives and support charitable causes within the educational communities United Educators Credit Union cooperative serves.
