Share your personal experience with the credit union:
What do you like about us? How have we helped you specifically? What do you see as advantages of membership? Your personal story will most likely be the most powerful influence on whether or not they join.
How to apply for membership:
Staff that joins United Educators within 30 days of your meeting will receive $10 deposited into their share savings account. Instruct them to attach their invite (66 kb) to the application to receive the $10. In addition, they should attach their membership referral coupon (516 kb) to ensure that you receive your incentives.
Normally one must deposit $25 into a share savings account to become a member. New staff taking advantage of the $10 deposit offers needs only to send us $15.
Application cards and postage paid envelopes are included with your meeting materials. They may also apply online if they wish. Once we receive their application, we will mail out a signature card. They will need to sign it, and mail it back to us with their deposit and new staff welcome invite.
This would be a good time to note that once they join, their family members are also eligible to join. And once a member, they are always a member of the credit union - even if they change schools or even leave the profession all together.
If you have any questions or need further information or clarification - please don't hesitate to contact us.
Tips from the Credit Union and other Ambassadors
- Hold the meeting during a time where you know staff will not be as busy
- Emphasize the banking online features to staff to encourage them to look past the location problem. Show that it is easy.
- Hand out free bees at the end of the presentation in order to receive the attendees' full attention.
- If uncomfortable about what to say, look at the outline or call the credit union and ask for help.
- Ask to borrow an informational videotape about credit unions for your meeting.
- Emphasize the differences between a credit union and a commercial bank.
- Follow up on the staff that attended the meeting to see if they joined.
- Get feedback from the staff that attended the meeting.
- Provide treats for the attendees; food is always a motivator and the credit union will reimburse you for the expense.
- Ask current members of the credit union at your school to talk about the credit union at the meeting.
- The meeting can be informal; you could simply invite staff and let them mingle while you talk to individuals about the credit union.
- Inform the credit union at least two weeks before your meeting. That way you will receive your materials in plenty of time.
